Wichita State University’s Innovation Campus, which is a physical extension of the Wichita State University main campus, is one of the nation’s largest and fastest-growing research/innovation parks, encompassing over 120 acres, and is home to a number of global companies and organizations. NetApp Inc. built its new facility on the Innovation Campus to secure its place in the city’s growing innovation economy and further tie the company to the community. The investment directly links NetApp and the future technology leaders attending the school.
NetApp Wichita is a new 168,000 SF office and research facility that required all the creativity and coordination of multiple disciplines within MKEC. NetApp Inc. requested unique, highly aesthetic, sustainable, and functional outdoor amenity spaces for employees and public use. The project specification included detailed hardscapes, landscapes, and water use throughout their campus space.
The extensive landscape comprises a native and adaptable plan composed of 110 trees, 600 shrubs, and over 27,000 ornamental grasses/perennials. MKEC provided civil engineering, survey, landscape architecture, and electrical engineering services for this new NetApp location.
The brick paving pattern and color scheme were a significant signature element repeated throughout all high-use locations. MKEC was able to assemble a look that is bold with both digital and organic elements influences.
Belden Permeable Series Pavers helped provide pedestrian scale and hierarchy in the project pavement types. The Belden Brick Company's broad range of warm grey earth tones for permeable applications offers the ability to create unique patterns and color mix opportunities as a strategic component of sustainable design. Clay brick offers wear longevity and color retention, which were critical to meeting the desired goals.
